Criminal charges against former President Alvaro Uribe’s chief of staff and intelligence chief may be dropped if the Supreme Court elects a new prosecutor general.
Prosecutor General Guillermo Mendoza told Caracol Radio that a quick election of his replacement will result in him not having the time to finish filing charges against the forrmer officials.
The court was supposed to elect a new prosecutor general by July 2009, but was unable to because it considered the shortlist drawn up by former President Alvaro Uribe unviable. The court will vote Wednesday on a new shortlist by Uribe’s successor, President Juan Manuel Santos.
The Prosecutor General’s Office is currently preparing to file charges against former director of intelligence agency DAS Maria Pilar del Hurtado and Uribe’s former chief of staff, Bernardo Moreno.
