Colombia coach Hernan Dario “Bolillo” Gomez is disappointed about the “unjust” elimination of his team from the Copa America. “We did everything but score,” the trainer told press.
Colombia’s elimination came as a shock after its surprising success in the group matches, which made Colombia top Group A and was able to hold favorite Argentina to a 0-0 draw. Also during the game against Peru, Colombia dominated the game, created most changes and was even awared a penalty kick that was missed by striker Rafael Falcao. It wasn’t until extra time that Colombia lost control and Peru was able to score twice.
According to Gomez, “soccer has this kind of games. We did everything to win. We should’ve been victorious after 90 minutes. Radamel Falcao never misses a penalty, not even during training,” the disappointed coach said.
“The boys are beat. But I told them we have to accept it, because the objective is the World Cup and we should get to the qualifications [of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil] strengthened,” Gomez told reportes. “In four games we created 36 scoring opportunities, we have a good defense and at times play good soccer, this is how I remember the Copa America. We do have a team for the qualifications,” said “Bolillo.”
Qualifications for the World Cup begin in October. World soccer organization FIFA has not yet set the fixtures for the games.
