Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has called for national unity while affirming the peace process could be complete “in a matter of months.”
Speaking through his allocated television and radio time on Monday, Santos asked that the peace process be left “under less speculation”, declaring that peace could be achieved in months “if the rhythm of the last few weeks continues.”
The head of state also called on the “enemies of the peace” to “maintain their sanity”, declaring that “when the time comes, you too [the ‘enemies’] will have your democratic right to vote for or against the agreement,” once again raising the possibility of a Colombian referendum at the conclusion of the peace talks.
However Santos maintained that : “We are more, who want peace.”
“No more rivers of blood” he said, adding that “looking for peace is imperative for any civilized society.”
The Colombian president concluded by making reference to the national day for victims and peace on Tuesday, declaring that “the best possible homage we can make to the millions of victims of this violence is to make sure that in the future there will be no more victims, there will be no more conflict, there will be no more blood and no more tears: that we achieve peace.”
