Colombia’s Wayuu communities will celebrate the bicentenary of Colombia’s independence from an indigenous perspective, at their annual cultural festival to be held in Uribia, in the northern department of la Guajira from May 14 to 16.
This year’s Wayuu cultural festival will focus on what historians call “The other rebellion”, namely the struggle of indigenous groups, black people and peasants against Spanish colonial rule.
The festival will involve information about the Wayuu tribe’s long-standing resistance to colonization and its enduring political and cultural autonomy.
This year for the first time the festival will also play host to indigenous writers from all over the Americas, an indigenous film festival and a showcase of different styles of dance from Colombia’s Caribbean coast.
The festival will also feature exhibitions of traditional handicraft and food stands, music, dance and storytelling competitions, as well as Wayuu games involving wrestling, horses and …donkey races!
