Colombia’s Vice President-elect Angelino Garzon told the country’s largest rebel group FARC that the incoming government of Juan Manuel Santos is willing to talk peace, but only if the rebels refrain from terrorist activities and kidnapping.
“Let the guerrillas take the most revolutionary decision, which is to ask forgiveness of the people for the harm they caused with their violence, their terrorism and kidnapping. If they take that decision the government of Juan Manuel Santos will show the generosity to construct peace deals and find ways to forgive and reconcile,” Garzon was quoted by Caracol Radio on Sunday.
The incoming vice president also said that the Santos government opposes a swap between members of the armed forces held by the FARC with guerrillas held in Colombian and U.S. prisons.
Santos and Garzon will take office in August.
