The attorney of victims in the lawsuit against Drummond announces they will appeal a court decision to allow Colombia’s former President Alvaro Uribe’s refusal to testify against the coal giant.
In a statement, lawyer Terry Collingsworth, lead counsel for the Plaintiffs in the Drummond case, said to be “very disappointed.”
“There is no immunity for illegal acts granted to anyone in this country, not actual, and certainly not former, presidents,” according to Collingsworth.
The lawyer went on to say that Uribe’s conduct is tantamount to “war crimes, and the law does not grant immunity to war criminals.”
He added that his team, from law firm Conrad & Scherer, LLP, are planning to appeal the decision by Washington D.C. federal judge John Bates “as soon as possible.”
The victims want Uribe to testify about alleged links between the coal company and now-defunct paramilitary organization AUC. Uribe has refused this.
