The government’s Victims Law is projected to cost the nation about $23.5 million over ten years, according to Colombia’s Finance Minister Juan Carlos Echeverry, newspaper El Espectador reported Tuesday.
Conservative Party President Jose Dario Salazar said his party was satisfied with the government’s evaluation of the cost and announced he would support the project because “the country should show solidarity” with victims of violence.
The conservative part also said it will push for women to get special assistance from the Victims Law.
“We will give priority to rural women who have been affected by the conflict,” Salazar said.
The Senate will continue to deliberate the Victims Law.
The Victims Law, which regulates compensation for victims of Colombia’s armed conflict, was originally passed by Colombia’s Congress in 2009.
