Venezuelan ambassador assures there is a ‘pre-war situation’

Colombia news - Gustavo Marquez

According to Venezuela’s ambassador to Bogota, his country must prepare for war as there is a ‘pre-war situation’ now Colombia allows the United States to use its military bases.

Ambassador Gustavo Marquez told Cali newspaper El Pais that he can not rule out that the U.S. plan to attack Venezuela. The ambassador said Venezuela had no plans to attack anyone.

“What (Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez) said exactly was that we have to ‘prepare ourselves for war’, because there is a pre-war situation: they are constructing a war theater that threatens Venezuela and all countries in the region,” Marquez told the newspaper.

The ambassador does not think Colombia and Venezuela will be able to improve relations anytime soon as the military pact with the U.S. and the way it came about, caused a lot of distrust in Caracas.

“As a consequence of the lack of transparency there is no trust and when there is no trust you can not have a stabile relationship,” Marquez said.

Following the news Colombia planned to sign an agreement with the United States to allow the Americans the use of military bases, Chavez froze diplomatic relations with his country’s western neighbor, threatened to cut trade and has ordered thousands of troops to the border.
