“Alfonso Cano,” the leader of the left-wing guerrilla organization FARC and one of Colombia’s most wanted criminals, is rumored to be on his way to a hospital room in Venezuela.
According to newspaper El Universal, three lawmakers from the western Venezuelan state of Tachira believe that interference of the Ministry of Health and police at the San Cristobol Central Hospital in the state’s capital city was to prepare for the arrival of the widely hunted FARC leader himself.
“We have reliable information that a room in Central Hospital is being prepared, to host a senior leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which could be Alfonso Cano,” deputy Leomagno Flores said.
According to the lawmaker, the FARC supreme leader may be transferred to the hospital to receive urgently needed medical attention. The requested hospital room is reportedly stocked with advanced medical technology.
The police detail on the hospital was alarmingly high, Flores added.
“They kicked out the police and the most skilled people in the hospital [that were not in the government’s confidence] because they were running this like a covert operation.”
Venezuela has long been accused by both the U.S. and Colombia of actively aiding the FARC. After Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos took office, Bogota ceased accusations that Caracas is harboring terrorists, but critics like former President Alvaro Uribe continue to accuse Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez of helping the rebels.
