Venezuela deported the FARC’s alleged ambassador to Europe, Joaquin Perez Becerra, to Colombia on Monday, two days after his arrest.
According to Colombia’s Interior and Justice Minister, German Vargas Lleras, Venezuela chose to deport instead of extradite the alleged guerrilla to avoid bureaucracy.
Perez Becerra had an international arrest warrant against him and will have to defend to charges of “conspiracy, financing terrorism and the administration of resources related to terrorist activities,” Juan Manuel Santos said Sunday.
According to Colombian authorities, the arrestant is director of Anncol, a Sweden-based website that regularly published press releases by the FARC.
At arrival, Perez Becerra made a brief statement to the press denying he is a member of the guerrilla organization, but a publicist.
The arrest and deportation of Perez Becerra led to protests by left-wing groups in Venezuela.
