The United States will formally hand over five airspace surveillance and control radars to Colombia, newspaper El Espectador reported Wednesday.
The five radars, installed in five Colombian provinces, were purchased with Plan Colombia resources and are part of an airspace surveillance system against drug smugglers so far managed by U.S. personnel.
The radars handover will lead to full Colombian control of the air surveillance equipment operating from the Caribbean island of San Andres, the border departments of La Guajira and Vichada, and the jungle departments of Guaviare and Caqueta.
Colombia and the U.S. have jointly been involved in counternarcotics and counterinsurgency operations through Plan Colombia since 2000.
