The government of President Hugo Chávez will keep on
giving shelter to the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces
(FARC), stated on Thursday
a report from the new US intelligence chief.
“Chávez will probably keep his links of several decades
with the FARC by providing them with shelter, due to his ideological
affinity with the group and his interest in influencing the
Colombian politics,” said Dennis Blair in an annual report
on security for the US Senate, AFP quoted.
The Intelligence National Director said that public awareness
of the documents found in a computer property of a rebel leader
killed during a raid in March and that attested to the president’s
ties with the FARC, “obliged Chávez, at least rhetorically,
to improve relations with Bogotá.”
US government officials have claimed that in the past the
FARC has found refuge in Venezuelan territory, something that
the Venezuelan government has straight denied.
