With just over a month to go to the all-important election date, the socially responsible ex-pat should start moving fast.
Even if an American has been away for many years and doesn’t maintain a residence in the U.S. a vote will still be counted. However new laws require U.S. citizens to submit a Federal Post Card Application to be registered to vote and to request an absentee ballot. If your application is approved an absentee ballot will be sent to you.
If you are already registered, request a ballot online, fill out the details and send the completed ballot to your local election office. Some states allow for voter registration by email or over the internet. If not, American citizens must send this application to the state where they last resided. Postal times from South America are between eight and 12 days and states have different deadlines.
