Colombian President Alvaro Uribe will replace one of the three candidate Prosecutors General on the shortlist from which the Supreme Court can pick the new head of prosecutions. The court so far refused to elect any of the nominees.
The President announced to take Juan Angel Palacio off the list and to come up with an alternative candidate. Palacio had been the most controversial of the three candidates because of his alleged involvement in the attempted bribery of members of the State Council.
Uribe announced the decision after a “very constructive dialogue” with the president and vice-presicent of the Supreme Court.
According to Uribe, Palacio himself withdrew his candidacy.
The Court and the Presidency until now were firm in the matter; Uribe refused to change the candidates, despite the court’s refusal to elect any of them.
From the shortlist, the successor of Mario Iguaran, who resigned in July, will be picked.
