Colombian President Alvaro Uribe will meet with the country’s Supreme Court to discuss the Court’s recent refusal to extradite prominent drug lords.
Court president Jaime Arrubla said wednesday that Uribe is welcome to talk to the magistrates, but warned the president that the court will not negotiate the current conditions for extradition.
In recent months, the Supreme Court denied the extradition of paramilitary drug lords, mainly because these war lords are suspected of a large number of crimes against humanity in Colombia.
According to the Arrubla, the court’s recent refusals to extradite are the result of the Colombian and U.S. governments failure to comply with the conditions set by the Court.
Human rights organizations and respresentatives of victims of paramilitary violence denounced that the extradition of paramilitary bosses has made it impossible to investigate the crimes committed by the paramilitary groups and their involvement with Colombia’s political elite.
