Colombian President Alvaro Uribe will attend a special UNASUR summit
on the expansion of U.S. military activity in Colombia later this
month, Argentinean government officials confirmed to local media.
The summit will be held in the south Argentinian city of Bariloche.
Colombia had earlier promised to attend the meeting on the condition that the summit was held outside Ecuador and, according to newspaper El Tiempo, was also to discuss arms trading in the continent.
According to website Buenos Aires Herald, Uribe confirmed his presence at the summit to his Argentinean counterpart Cristina Fernandez.
The same website says South American leaders will also meet with U.S. President Barack Obama during the General Assembly meeting of the United Nations in New York.
The U.S.-Colombian plan to allow the U.S. to conduct anti-narcotics operations in the region has led to frictions with neighboring countries like Venezuela and Ecuador who consider the proximity of U.S. military a threat to their sovereignty. Brazil, Bolivia and Chile have also expressed their concern.
