Colombian President Alvaro Uribe will travel to Canada this weekend to attend the 36th annual G8 summit, where he has been asked to discuss his government’s fight against drug-trafficking and terrorism, Caracol Radio reported Thursday.
Uribe received a special invitation from Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to go to the meeting, which will be attended by the leaders of the world’s eight biggest economic powers – the U.S., France, Italy, U.K., Japan, Canada, Germany and Russia. Also present will be representatives of international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Bank and UNESCO.
The theme of this year’s G8 summit, held in Toronto, will be “Recovery and New Beginning,” and the Colombian president will offer insight into the policies his government employed to increase security in the country.
The G8 summit will take place on June 25 and 26.
