Colombian President Alvaro Uribe on Tuesday announced that the broadcasting of weekly community councils he presides over is suspended until after the presidential elections in May.
Earlier this month, candidates for the 2010-2014 presidency complained that the broadcasts could unfairly favor Uribe if he is allowed, and decides, to run for a third term. Following the criticism, the country’s inspector general advised the president to suspend the broadcasts.
The community councils will continue to be held in a different town every week but will no longer be shown on state television.
