The Colombian Government will not ask the United States to extradite
prominent FARC commanders ‘Simon Trinidad’ and ‘Sonia’ to include them
in a humanitarian agreement with the FARC, President Álvaro Uribe said
Thursday.
U.S. ambassador to Bogotá William Brownfield had said Wednesday his country would consider an extradition request for the two if that would contribute to peace in Colombia.
But Uribe is not considering such a request. “The only only acceptable humanitarian deal is that they [the FARC] release all hostages,” the President said, adding that he has not received any specific proposals from the guerrillas.
‘Simon Trinidad’ and ‘Sonia’ are currently held in the United States on drug trafficking charges. The FARC want them to be part of a group of 500 guerrillas they want to swap for 22 members of Colombia’s security forces who are held in the Colombian jungle.
