Former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe is ready to “face the nation” when testifying before a Congressional commission for his alleged role in the illegal wiretapping of his government opponents.
Uribe is expected to appear before a special commission on Thursday to face accusations that he ordered the illegal wiretapping of Supreme Court magistrates, opposition politicians, human rights workers and critical journalists.
The former President told supporters he was ready to testify in the case “with a sense of democracy and committment to the nation.”
Several of Uribe’s closest aides have been dismissed by the country’s Inspector General and charged by the Prosecutor General. High intelligence officials are in jail over the illegal wiretapping.
Victims say Uribe himself is responsible for the illegal wiretapping, while the former President insists the illegal activities happened behind his back.
