Colombian President Álvaro Uribe offered his condolences to Aida
Quilcue and her family for the death of Quilcue’s husband Edwin
Legarda, who was killed by the army Tuesday. He also asked not to “unfairly
judge” members of the security forces.
According to the President, preliminary investigations by the army itself showed the army division responsible for the indigenous’ death was on high alert for the alleged presence of a vehicle transporting weapons in the area. He added that Legarda has ignored two stop signs before the soldiers opened fire on his pick up truck and killed him.
Colombia’s Attorney General’s office, the Prosecutor General’s office and the Colombian office of the United Nations’ Human Rights Council are investigating the death of the indigenous leader’s husband.
Uribe called on these bodies to proceed with these investigations with the utmost objectivity. “We are obliged to not unfairly proceed against members of our army,” the President said.
Indigenous organization CRIC Wednesday conducted a massive meeting and condemned the murder on one of their counsiler’s husbands.
