Colombian President Álvaro Uribe Wednesday congratulated Barack Obama on
winning the U.S. presidential election and said he looks forward to
continue the countries’ cooperation in the war against drugs and terrorism.
“Congratulations to President Obama for this great victory,” Uribe said and also congratulated the American people “for its democracy, which remains (…) an example of pluralism and the defense of liberties.”
The President stressed Colombia’s interest in continuing to jointly coordinate “very necessary” policies to help Colombia’s fight against drugs and terrorism.
Departing Republican President George W. Bush has always supported Colombia financially and militarily in its fight against coca production and leftist guerrilla group FARC through Plan Colombia, a multi billion dollar plan that is likely to be cut, because of the current financial crisis.
Barack Obama announced before his election he would not support the Free Trade Agreement signed by Bush and Uribe unless Colombia improves the situation for labor rights activists in the country.
