Outgoing Colombian President Alvaro Uribe on Tuesday hinted he may run for mayor of Bogota in the capital’s October 2011 elections.
In an interview with RCN radio, the Medellin native spoke of his “affection and gratitude” for the capital city, which was his home during his two terms in office between 2002-2010.
Asked whether he would consider running for mayoral office in 2011, Uribe did not dismiss the idea and instead confirmed an interest in “helping things run well” in the city. He added, “I would like a good mayor of Bogota, I like to see the city prosper and be managed well.”
With less than two months left in office, Uribe’s popularity rates remain above 60%, largely due to the success of his hard-line security policies in the military struggle against guerrilla groups. On August 7 he will hand the presidency over to former Defense Minister Juan Manuel Santos, who won an overwhelming majority, with 69% of the votes cast in Sunday’s election.
