Students from Colombia’s University of Antioquia decided not to return to classes until authorities comply with their demands.
A spokesman for the General Assembly of the University of Antioquia demanded the “demilitarization of the instituion, both inside and out,” reported Caracol Radio. Other demands included opening the university to wider society, returning tables that had been donated for student use, and establishing a clear methodology for constructing the new “Ley de Educacion Superior” — a law for higher education.
The students also want democratic guarantees of their right to mobilize and conduct other protest-related activities.
“We respect the decision of the National Student Board to raise the national strike, but without the fulfillment of each and every one of these conditions, the strike at the University of Antioquia will not be lifted,” said another student spokesman.
