Bogota’s Universidad de los Andes is Colombia’s best university, according to the 2011 QS University Ranking: Latin America. The private academic institution is the 6th best-ranked of the continent.

Colombia has 21 universities among Latin America’s top 200 academic institutions.

Colombia’s top 10 universities

  1. Universidad de los Andes (Bogota)
  2. Universidad Nacional (Bogota)
  3. Pontificana Universidad Javeriana (Bogota)
  4. Universidad de Antioquia (Medellin)
  5. Universidad del Valle (Cali)
  6. Universidad del Rosario (Bogota)
  7. Universidad del Norte (Barranquilla)
  8. Jorge Tadeo Lozano (Bogota)
  9. Catholic University (Bogota)
  10. Universidad de Caldas (Manizales)

The Universidad de los Andes received a 84.7% score, followed by the public National University (79.5%) and the private Pontificana Universidad Javeriana (63.5%): all universities located in the capital Bogota.

Five of the eight Colombian universities that made it to the top 100 of the ranking are from the capital.

Seven of Colombia’s ten best-ranked universities are private.

Brazil tops the QS LatAm ranking with 65 universities — two of which in the top four, followed by Mexico with 35 universities and Argentina and Chile, both with 25 universities in the top 200.

It is the first time the U.K.-based Quacquarelli Symonds published a Latin American ranking. QS published its first global academic institution rankings in 2004.
