The secretary general of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), Nestor Kirchner, will travel to Colombia to meet with President Alvaro Uribe and President-elect Juan Manuel Santos, Colombian media reported Friday.
During a meeting with the Colombian ambassador to Argentina Alvaro Eduardo Garcia Jimenez, the UNASUR official announced “I will be in Colombia to see Uribe before he ceases to be president and I will take this opportunity to meet with the president (elect).”
According to Kirchner the purpose of the trip will be to “to deepen the work of UNASUR” in Colombia.
The Argentine official explained that the work of UNASUR is to encourage the “coexistence of countries that have different political and ideological concepts” with the aim of establishing “an integrated region through diversity, pluralism and complete democracy.”
President Uribe will end his term in office on August 7, to be replaced by President-elect Juan Manuel Santos.
