Guerrilla groups FARC and ELN have committed serious violations of international human rights law, observed Colombia’s UN office on Human Rights.
The Colombia Office of the UN High Commission for Human Rights has condemned the actions of the guerrilla groups and stressed that the violations qualify as crimes against humanity, W Radio reported Friday.
The Office also said that no matter how intense the conflict within a country, legal and illegal armed groups must respect, without exception, the life, limb and property of the civilian population.
According to Christian Salazar, representative of the Colombia UN Office for Human Rights said ”In the last few months, serious violations of International Humanitarian Law by the FARC and ELN.”
The representative also condemned the murders of protected persons, the indiscriminate attacks, the attacks against the property of civilians, threats, and forced displacement committed by guerrilla groups in the country.
Salazar said “No matter how great the armed conflict that exists in a country, the FARC and the ELN are required to adhere to humanitarian law and absolutely respect the civilian population.”
