The UN remembers former Colombian foreign affairs minister a “tireless worker for peace” and “an advocate for diplomacy,” reported Caracol Radio Wednesday.
Augusto Ramirez Ocampo, who died Tuesday evening in his Bogota home, was an influential politician and mayor of Bogota during the 1980s and 1990s.
Caracol Radio recieved a statement from the UN, which highlighted Ocampo’s achievements and extended condolences to the Colombian’s family.
“It was the Colombian who held important positions within the United Nations, both in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) where he was Director of the Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean, and also in the UN Mission Mission in El Salvador (ONUSAL), where he was the Special Representative of the Secretary General. Previously, he was one of the architects of the agreements of Contadora and the Special Plan for Central America which started the peace process in Central America.”
According to Caracol Radio, Bogota’s council members also paid homage to Ocampo on Wednesday with a minute of silence.
