The United Nations asked Colombia’s largest rebel group FARC on Monday to respect the indigenous peoples in the country.
The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, James Anaya, made the call on the last day of his visit to Colombia.
The UN representative is said to be “extremely concerned” because the FARC seem to be “completely unaware of human rights standards and international human rights.”
According to the UN representative, the situation of the indigenous in Colombia is “serious, critical and deeply concerning.” However, Anaya recognized the Uribe administration had made steps forward when it comes to health and education.
