The fortresses of Cartagena and the historic center of Santa Fe de Antioquia are to join the World Monuments Fund, protecting monuments at risk.
According to the Fund, nearly one hundred sites of cultural interest in the world require urgent assistance to ensure their preservation. The fortresses of San Fernando and San Jose in Cartagena, and the historical center of Santa Fe de Antioquia, are listed on Colombia’s behalf.
The New York-based foundation Tuesday unveiled its biennial list of 93 cultural heritage sites which it believes require active measures to ensure their preservation, either due to a lack of public awareness of danger to the site, or due to a scarcity of resources devoted to maintenance.
When compiling its list, the foundation accepts proposals from individuals, organizations or authorities concerned with the preservation of certain places that believe need to draw international attention to prevent their cultural heritage value being lost, reports newspaper El Tiempo.
The World Monuments Fund, which has compiled this list every two years since 1996, tries to provide all financial and technical assistance to promote social awareness and improved preservation of historical sites.
