Municipal transport will resume today in the western Colombian department of Choco, reported Caracol Radio Monday.
Transportation companies suspended travel last Thursday due to threats from Colombia’s largest guerrilla group the FARC. Road travel in the region stopped with the exception of a very limited number of vehicles accompanied by security escorts.
The FARC announced in leaflets that the department would be subject to an “armed strike” until March 8, but authorities have decided to reopen transport routes a few days early in order to get necessary supplies to the department.
Colombian police and security forces have increased their presence in the region in the hopes of preventing any attacks on transport vehicles.
