A Colombian Senate commission has approved the reduction of term limits for a number of top government positions as part of the “Balance of Powers” reform put forward by the Santos government, according to Caracol Radio.
The Prosecutor General, Inspector General, Comptroller, and Ombudsman are all to be kept from seeking a second term in office. This decision was taken after the commission heard the opinions of the country’s high courts, the Inspector General, and the Ombudsman.
In addition, it was decided that the Comptroller would have to wait one year after finishing his/her term before seeking another position in public office.
Rejected was the proposal of lowering the minimum age of a senator to 25, while approval was given to national conscription in which each region would be able to elect senators.
