The campaign “Computers for Schools,” run by the Colombian Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, last year provided educational institutions around the country with more than 230,000 computers, the ministry’s website announced on Tuesday.
“Computers for Schools” is a national scheme that encourages individuals and businesses to donate computer equipment to Colombia’s most rural and remote schools, with the aim of facilitating “access to information and knowledge through the use of technology.”
The campaign is active in the majority of the country’s departments with, for example, some 471 institutions in the central department of Cundinamarca receiving a total of 6,466 computers, and 372 donations reaching schools in the municipality of Mosquera in 2009.
The ministry website claims that 99% of Colombia’s municipalities have already benefited from the scheme.
