Colombia News - The Twin

Accusations by former paramilitary chief and drug lord ‘The Twin’ that Colombian President Alvaro Uribe was helped to power by paramilitary organization AUC are part of a criminal plan to discredit the country’s government, claimed the National Police Director on Wednesday.

The Director, General Oscar Naranjo, said that the testimonies made by Miguel Angel Mejia Munera, alias ‘the Twin’, which declared the AUC paramilitaries responsible for bringing President Alvaro Uribe to power, were part of a criminal plan to undermine and discredit Colombia’s high officials.

Mejia Munera claimed on Tuesday that the Colombian government had various long established links with the country’s infamous paramilitary organizations.

“The government has fought without distinction against all criminals in Colombia. We believe that the likes of ‘Don Mario’ and ‘the Twin’ have orchestrated a systematic campaign to attack government officials who are fighting against drug-trafficking and terrorism in the country,” stated the General in a report by newspaper El Espectador.

Naranjo said that Colombia should not ignore such attacks by criminals and strive ever harder to bring them to justice.

Meanwhile, the commander of Colombia’s Military Forces, General Freddy Padilla, called upon Colombians to have faith in national institutions and to appreciate the difference between the random accusations of a convicted criminal, such as ‘the Twin’, and that of the conduct a man of such “strength and honor as President Uribe.”

Padilla concluded by stating that “Colombians cannot let themselves be fooled by accusation which are intended to affect Colombian society. We cannot allow such statements to thrive in our society.”
