Ten farmers were abducted from a village hundred kilometers south of
Bogotá Saturday. Authorities blame the FARC’s 26th front for the
abduction.
The mass kidnapping took place Saturday in the afternoon and evening in Puerto Gómez, a village in one of the Meta department’s rural areas.
According to deputy commander of the Police Fabio Antonio Leal Bedoya, a group of armed men took the hostages while they were taking part in a local Christmas celebration.
The police official ruled our the farmers were taken hostage for ransom. “These people have no economic capacity,” the police official told Caracol Radio. Leal thinks the farmers were abducted to be forced to work for the guerrillas.
The FARC is holding approximately 700 people hostage in Colombia, most of them for ransom.
