Suspended Mayor of Bogota Samuel Moreno should pay for the damages to the city with his own personal estate, said a letter signed by 2,222 Bogota residents, various media reported Tuesday.
The Citizen’s Ecology Network, an organization that promotes civic participation in politics, arranged the letter. The signatures were reportedly all collected in less than two weekends.
“The letter, which we are waiting to personally hand to Samuel Moreno on Friday, July 29… asks him to personally recognize his mistakes and to take responsibility for them,” explained David Franky, the founder of the network, according to Caracol Radio.
The Bogota mayor was suspended from his post in May for alleged irregularities in the awarding of public work contracts to construction firms. The prosecutor general has charged him with extortion, embezzlement, malfeasance by omission and contracting without legal requirements.
Prosecutors say that the suspended mayor extorted as much as $2.8 million dollars.
According to the letter, Moreno should compensate his constituents for his offenses with his own property.
