Suspected members of FARC medical support network arrested

by Rose Lander September 9, 2015

Two suspects captured during a raid are accused of logistically assisting the FARC by obtaining and delivering medication to the country’s largest guerrilla group.

The men were arrested and the medication seized in the Santa Isabel neighborhood of Bogota, according to a statement made by the Prosecutor General’s Office on Monday.

One of the suspects, known as ‘el Cucho’, whose real name has not been revealed, is allegedly part of the logistical support network for the FARC and responsible for procuring and transporting medication to the guerrilla group.

Among the medicines el Cucho obtained was glucantime, used to treat leishmaniasis, an infectious disease transmitted by sandflies.

In total 482 vials of glucantime were seized during the raid. When authorities arrived at the property in Bogota where the medicine was being stored, the residents attempted to get rid of it by throwing the bottles onto the roof of the neighboring house, where they eventually were retrieved.

In the main room of the house 32 bottles of glucantime were found, allegedly to be sent over the next few days to the states of Vichada and Putumayo where the Eastern Bloc of the FARC, a faction of the guerrilla group, are operating.

According to  a statement made yesterday by the Prosecutor General’s Office, the two suspects will be tried for the funding of terrorism and organized crime groups and for the administration of resources related to terrorist activity.
