A suspected FARC attack in the north of Colombia has left a National Army sergeant dead and seven soldiers wounded, according to Colombia’s Caracol Radio.

The attack took place on Tuesday morning and was aimed at a military convoy  traveling through Catacumbo in the Norte de Santander state of Colombia. According to the commander of the Vulcan Task Force, General Luis Fernando Montoya, a series of mines were activated in the road by guerrilla from the 33rd Front of the FARC.

“They set a deadly trap on a public road to attack our men,” Montoya told Caracol Radio.

The seven soldiers wounded from the shrapnel accompanying the blasts have been transferred to a hospital in Cucuta city for specialized medical care.

In the last month, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the country’s largest active rebel group – have been allegedly responsible for two separate attacks on sections of highway in the southwestern state of Cauca. No deaths were reported.

The FARC are currently involved in peace negotiations with the Colombian government in Havana, Cuba, aimed at ending the 50 year conflict, but so far no ceasefire has been put in place.
