Colombia supports a solution where Israel and Palestine can live in peace as neighbors, President Juan Manuel Santos said on Tuesday.

Santos made the statement during a dinner with the Israeli President Shimon Peres.

So far, Colombia has failed to support for the admission of Palestine as a member state of United Nations, however, Santos said, eventually the Palestinians must be granted state rights.

“We support … a solution where two states, Israel and Palestine, live in peace as neighbors,” said Santos. “We believe that this is the best answer for both nations.”

According to the Colombian head-of-state the most effective way to achieve this is through a “negotiated settlement with the Palestinian people.”

Santos reiterated his support for Israel by stating that Colombia and Israel not only shared common values of democracy, peace and freedom but also a history of difficulties and conflicts.

According to Santos, this has strengthened and encouraged the peoples in both countries in a strive to do better.
