The Summit of the Americas will showcase Colombia’s improved security situation said Colombian Defense Minister Juan Carlon Pinzon Monday
Pinzon told Caracol Radio the increased security measures were designed to present a positive image of Colombia to the outside world.
“Those who are thinking of doing public demonstrations will do so in an orderly manner and showcase the country that we are,” said Pinzon.
Air Force commander General Tito Pinilla told the radio station that the security team would be in charge of air traffic control, aircraft safety and the transportation of some Caribbean presidents. The airforce offered the services of the presidential helicopters to any Caribbean leaders who have difficulty getting to Cartagena.
The Summit will take place on April 14 and 15 in the Colombian Caribbean coastal city of Cartagena and will be attended by the heads of state of all countries in the Americas except Cuba and Ecuador.
