Colombian university students selected 25 student representatives to participate in an upcoming education reform debate with the Colombian government, according to local media reports Sunday.
25 representatives were chosen from 300 candidates during a meeting of student organization the National Student Round Table (MANE) in the central Colombian city of Manizales Saturday.
Speaking with Caracol Radio, student leader Carlos Mauricio Toro said, “one of the most important points we worked on in Manizales was to make sure the National Government through the Education Ministry recognized MANE as the sole legitimate student representative for these discussions.”
The 25 representatives will present a student drafted education reform bill that was created after student protests blocked a prior education reform bill know as Law 30 last year. Students vehemently oppose Law 30 saying it would lead to the privatization of higher education.
