A stage adaptation of Colombian author Gabirel Garcia Marquez’ novel “La Candida Erendida” premiers in Washington on Wednesday, reports entertainment website Vive.in.
“The Incredible and Sad Story of Candida Erendida and her Heartless Grandmother” will run for the next four weeks at the Gala Hispanic Theater, which is celebrating its 35th year of promoting Hispanic arts in the United States.
The story by the Nobel Prize winner takes place in La Guajira, Colombia, and is the tale of a young woman who is forced into prostitution by her grandmother in order to pay for accidentally burning down their house.
Director Jorge Ali Triana told the Vive.in that he does not want “to illustrate the novel on the stage, for this would be very lazy. Each reader sees it differently in their own imagination. It is better to translate it into another language so people aren’t searching for the novel without seeing the play, although with great fidelity to the original feeling.”
The play will incorporate elements of the magical realism that characterize the works of Garcia Marquez.
Colombian Ambassador Gabriel Silva is listed as the honorary sponsor of the production. The play will run through February 27.
