A meeting of South American Foreign and Defense Ministers in Ecuador ended without agreement on the U.S. use of Colombian bases.
Colombia refused to allow the other countries to show the content of the pact that allows the U.S. the use of at least seven military bases. The country’s State Council will have to look at the document before it is sent to UNASUR.
Also, Colombian Defense Minister Gabriel Silva Lujan demanded other countries to show the content of military deals they have with parties outside UNASUR.
The end accord of the summit reiterated that the U.S.-Colombian plan can not compromise the sovereignty of neighboring countries and that breaching this could seriously harm security and mutual confidence in the region.
