An army officer has died of wounds he sustained while taking part in “Operation Chameleon,” a rescue mission that liberated four FARC hostages in early June, reports Colombian media.
Officer Edward Milciades Guzman Baron was injured in the hours following the operation, in combat in the jungle surrounding the rescue zone.
Guzman Baron had been receiving treatment for his wounds at a health centre in the town of Villavicencio in the Meta department.
The officer’s remains will be transported to his hometown of Neiva, where a military ceremony will be held.
Some 300 members of the armed forces were involved in Operation Chameleon, which rescued four members of Colombia’s armed forces; General Mendieta, Colonel Murillo, Colonel Donato and Sergeant Arbey Argote, who had spent the last twelve years in FARC captivity.
