Colombian siren Sofia Vergara appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair Spain’s July issue and discussed her rise to fame in an interview with the magazine.

The star of the U.S. sitcom Modern Family sports a strapless red silk dress for the cover, sultrily puffing a cigarette. She can be seen in an elegant photo spread wearing a clingy black dress, giving the camera a smoky gaze.

The 39-year-old sex symbol also spoke about the media’s comparisons between her and younger stars in an interview. “I’m sorry for the actresses in their twenties who get compared to me. If I was that age, I would be mad that they compared me to an old woman of 40.” Vergara will celebrate her fortieth birthday July 10.

The Barranquilla-born starlet revealed that early in her career she tried to imitate native English speakers so she could get rid of her now-famous, exotic accent. “One day I said, ‘I will try to get rid of this accent to get more roles.'”

Vergara was recently named the Best Comedy Actress in the past year by U.S. women’s magazine Glamour.
