Shakira accuses ex-boyfriend of stealing $3M

Colombian singer Shakira on Tuesday accused her ex-boyfriend of stealing more than $3 million from her.

She went on the offensive against Antonio de la Rua on Tuesday, a week and a half after his third attempt to gain legal entitlement to some of her earnings was dismissed by a court in Los Angeles.

De la Rua, son of former Argentine president Fernando de la Rua, argues that in addition to being Shakira’s ex-boyfriend he was also her manager and is therefore at least partly responsible for her current success. He wants $100 million “for having helped her professional growth.”

In response, Shakira’s team have accused the Argentine of spending close to $1 million, without her consent, on “holidays with his new girlfriend and parties in Ibiza.”

They also claim that de la Rua took at least $2 million dollars, without permission, from Shakira’s personal accounts and that he borrowed $200,000 to buy a yacht but never returned the money.

Despite the Los Angeles High Court ruling that the Argentine “lacked any legal rights over the earnings of the singer”, de la Rua has vowed to keep on fighting.

Shakira’s 11-year relationship with de la Rua ended in August 2010. The singer is now with Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué, with whom she has a son.
