Senator Alirio Villamizar Afanador turned himself in to federal agents
of the Prosecution in northern Bogota, in response to an arrest warrant
handed down by the Supreme Court.
The Court is investigating his role in the alleged delivery of a notary in Bucaramanga in exchange for his vote in the first reelection of President Alvaro Uribe.
The senator, who is also the vice president of Colombia’s Conservative Party, is being held at the Attorney General’s facilities awaiting to testify for the Supreme Court regarding his alleged role in the extortion.
Villamizar Afanador is also being investigated for illegally receiving funds after investigators found 730 million pesos at his Bucaramanga residence.
Key evidence for the prosecutors is the testimony of notary Luz Yanuth Rojas, who confessed that she came to Bucaramanga’s Notary 11 office on Villamizar Afandor’s behalf, and each month was required to pay him half of the earnings of her office in cash.
