Engineering student Claudia Vanessa Clavache, 19, received second and third degree burns to 80% of her body and died of respiratory failure following the March 31 bomb blast in the University of Nariño, El Tiempo reported Friday.
Fellow sociology student Andres Arteago Ceballos, 28, died and seven others were injured in the explosion. Clavache was taken along with the other casualties to Pasto’s San Pedro Hospital where she spent 10 days in the intensive care unit before passing away in the early hours of Friday morning.
The university described the incident at the time as an “accident” although university sources later said that the incident occurred when a group of students were handling explosive materials in a workshop on the university campus with the intention of using them in student protests, according to El Espectador.
Nariño Police are fairly certain that the students were handling bomb-making material including black powder, shrapnel, bullets and river stones wrapped in aluminum foil.
