Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa on Saturday met with his newly-sworn-in Colombian counterpart Juan Manuel Santos and assured the Colombian Head of State is free to travel to Ecuador without fear of being arrested.
In a press conference in Bogota, Correa said that Colombia had handed over the computers found in the camp of FARC commander Raul Reyes, which was one of the Ecuadorean conditions to re-establish ties with its neighbor to the north. Ecuador broke diplomatic ties with Colombia in March 2008 after the Colombian military entered Ecuador to kill Reyes and 25 others who were present in the guerrilla camp.
Correa also assured that now that Santos is President of Colombia, he “is welcome and enjoys all guarantees to be in Ecuador” despite the warrant for his arrest issued by an Ecuadorean judge over the former Defense Minister’s responsibility in the cross-border raid.
Santos and Correa met privately shortly after the inauguration of the President. Correa left Colombia immediately after the meeting with Santos.
