Santos urges FARC to ‘play fair’ and keep word on peace talks

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Sunday urged rebel group FARC to play a fair game and not ask for the impossible while engaged in peace talks.

Santos made his statements during “the victims’ march for peace” that was held in the northern department of Bolivar.

“And from here, from Montes de Maria, I say: Be true to your word! Negotiate these points, play fair, do not start asking for the impossible, do not start asking for things that will not be granted, things that are not in the agreements,” Santos told the FARC.

“Let’s be determined to reach agreements respecting the word, respecting what we sign,” said Santos before he stressed, “peace will come to Colombia. That’s my goal, that’s my commitment.”

The president reiterated that as far as he is concerned peace will come to Colombia rather “sooner than later,” and said the government will manage the talks with the FARC despite criticism led by his political rival, former President Alvaro Uribe.

Santos told the crowd in the town of El Carmen de Bolivar that the peace process in Cuba was started taking possible resistance against the talks into account. “I did it knowing that peace has many enemies,” the president said.
